Edna Traccarella Voice Scholarship competition for high school students were
Bonnie Jean Early, Mary Katherine Kilgore and Phyllis Dye.

Dye received her bachelor and master of music degrees in voice from Bucknell
University and West Virginia University.  She has served on a college/university
level as both a piano and voice faculty member.  Her repertoire includes most
major oratorios and many operatic roles, and she performed as a soloist for
many years at the Victoria, Texas, Bach Festival and with symphony orchestras
in the southeast.  Dye has extensive experience as a vocal competition adjudicator,
including Metropolitan Opera district auditions.

Early is a graduate of Westminster Choir College and the University of Southern
Mississippi, has also done extensive post-graduate study with a number of
Master Teachers, and has performed with Mobile Opera in many productions.
She has taught voice for many years and maintains a private voice studio in
Mobile.  Early is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing,

Clayton College and State University and master of music studies in choral
conducting at the University of Alabama.  Kilgore has performed as a soprano
soloist, organist, pianist and choral conductor.  In addition, she teaches private
lessons in both voice and piano.  Kilgore is currently the Director of Music at the
Fairhope United Methodist Church.

The competition, which is intended to nurture young vocal talent in Baldwin
County, was open to high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who made
application by March 7, 2009.  The competition was held on Saturday, March 28,

Eastern Shore Choral Society ~ Scholarship Program
Jane Blaum, M.D., Chairwoman

In 1996, the Eastern Shore Choral Society endowed a scholarship fund,
calling it the Edna Traccarella Fellowship Award Fund.  In that same year,
the first award was given to Spanish Fort School.  When Edna Traccarella
passed away in 1999, additional contributions were made to the Award
Fund in her memory and in recognition of her love of singing.

Historically, the Eastern Shore Choral Society's contributions from the
Award Fund have all been given to area schools' music departments.

Our annual Edna Traccarella Scholarship Competition is held in
March of each year in which high school students compete for
money that will enable winners to pursue vocal studies.

On March 28, 2009, the Eastern Shore Choral Society
held its sixth annual Edna Traccerella Scholarship Competition.
This is a countywide voice competition for high school freshmen,
sophomores and juniors. Scholarship monies awarded
enable winners to pursue vocal studies. This scholarship competition
is a dream of Edna's that we are perpetuating.
